For rural Oxford County and Thames Valley homes that the big review sites don't write for: a family that buys a quarter or half of beef every fall, runs a chest freezer in an unheated garage year-round, and loses power in an ice storm more winters than not. The five products below in the 5–10 cu ft group are the apartment- and garage-size freezers most households actually buy first; the four in the 14–25 cu ft group are what a quarter, half, or whole beef order actually needs, chest or upright. Every row is Amazon.ca-first — a verified Canadian price, read off the listing itself, never a guess — with garage-ready ambient range, basket count, and warranty called out honestly, including everywhere a model doesn't state one.

Frigidaire EFRF7003 7 Cu. Ft. Chest Deep Freezer Frigidaire | Chest, manual defrost | Not stated on this listing — Frigidaire's own 5 cu ft "Garage-Ready" variant states a numeric range, this 7 cu ft black listing does not, so confirm with Frigidaire before placing it in an unheated space | 1 removable vinyl-coated wire basket | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with Frigidaire before buying | Amazon.ca's best-selling 7 cu ft chest freezer by review count — an adjustable thermostat, removable vinyl-coated wire basket, and an easy-access defrost drain. More+ 4.6 stars from 602 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check, by far the deepest review history of any product in this table — "#1 Top Rated" badge on the listing – This specific black 7 cu ft listing does not print a numeric garage-ready ambient range the way Frigidaire's own 5 cu ft "Garage-Ready" model does — confirm with Frigidaire before an unheated install
Kenmore 8.7 Cu. Ft. Chest Freezer, Garage Ready Kenmore | Chest, manual defrost | Marketed "Garage Ready" — no numeric ambient range stated on this listing | 1 basket | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with Kenmore's Amazon.ca seller before buying | A step up in capacity from the 7 cu ft units above for about the same footprint, sold as "Garage Ready" with front drain and manual defrost. More+ 8.7 cu ft of capacity in roughly the same footprint class as a 7 cu ft unit, for buyers who outgrow 7 cu ft but don't want to jump straight to a beef-sized freezer – 3.7 out of 5 stars from only 18 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check — the thinnest review history of the three Group A chest freezers here
Danby DCF100A5WDB 10.00 cu. ft. More+ 4.6 stars from 17 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check, and the same explicit 0°F–110°F garage-ready range printed on the listing as its smaller 7 cu ft sibling – Listed as only 1 left in stock on Amazon.ca at the time of this check — appliance listings like this one restock irregularly
SMETA 10.6 Cu. Ft. Garage Chest Freezer SMETA | Chest, manual defrost | Marketed as a "Garage Freezer" — no numeric ambient range stated on this listing | 1 removable basket | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with SMETA's Amazon.ca seller before buying | A budget 10.6 cu ft chest freezer sold as a garage freezer, with a removable basket and 4 wheels for repositioning a freezer this size without a dolly. More+ Lowest price per cubic foot of any product in this table, and 4 wheels built in — useful given a 10.6 cu ft chest freezer is awkward to drag across a garage floor alone – Zero customer ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check — this is a newer listing with no review history to lean on, unlike every other product in this table |

GE FCM16SLWW 15.7 Cu. Ft. Chest Freezer GE | Chest, manual defrost | Not stated on this listing — GE's own support page states refrigeration stops reliably cooling below about 60°F (15.5°C) ambient without a garage-ready design (see How We Chose); confirm before an unheated install | Not stated on this listing | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with GE before buying | GE's 15.7 cu ft manual-defrost chest freezer — the entry point into true quarter-and-half-beef territory, with the lowest price per cubic foot of the four Group B products here. More+ Lowest price per cubic foot of the four beef-size products in this table, at 4.5 stars from 8 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check – No garage-ready ambient range stated anywhere on this listing — GE's own support content (cited below) says a non-garage-ready unit can stop cooling reliably below about 60°F ambient, so an unheated garage is a real risk with this specific model
Hamilton Beach HBFRF2129 21 Cu. Ft. Double-Door Chest Freezer Hamilton Beach | Chest, manual defrost, double-door lid | Marketed "Garage-Ready" — no numeric ambient range stated on this listing | Vinyl-coated baskets | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with Hamilton Beach before buying | A 21 cu ft double-door-lid chest freezer marketed Garage-Ready, with vinyl-coated baskets and a space-saving flat back for against-the-wall placement. More+ Double-door lid design means opening one side to grab something doesn't let all the cold air out of a 21 cu ft cabinet the way a single full-length lid would – Only 1 left in stock on Amazon.ca at the time of this check, with a time-limited promotional price — confirm the current price before counting on $799.99
Kenmore 17 Cu. Ft. Upright Freezer, Garage Ready Kenmore | Upright, convertible refrigerator/freezer, frost-free auto defrost | Marketed "Garage Ready" — no numeric ambient range stated on this listing | 4 shelves (upright, not a basket design) | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with Kenmore's Amazon.ca seller before buying | A 17 cu ft upright, convertible refrigerator/freezer with 4 shelves and frost-free auto defrost — the shelved alternative to a chest freezer for the same beef order. More+ Auto-defrost and 4 shelves mean no manual defrosting and no digging to the bottom of a chest to find last month's roasts – 3.6 out of 5 stars from only 5 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check, and Christensen Ranch's own guide (cited below) notes upright freezers hold less meat than a chest freezer of the same rated cubic footage
Kenmore 14.0 Cu. Ft. Upright Freezer, Garage Ready Kenmore | Upright, convertible refrigerator/freezer, auto defrost | Marketed "Garage Ready" — no numeric ambient range stated on this listing | 4 shelves (upright, not a basket design) | Not stated on this listing — confirm directly with Kenmore's Amazon.ca seller before buying | The smaller 14 cu ft version of the upright above — the entry point into whole-beef territory (12–18 cu ft) in a shelved, convertible refrigerator/freezer cabinet. More+ Sits right at the low end of Christensen Ranch's 12–18 cu ft whole-beef range (cited below) while costing meaningfully less than the 17 cu ft version above – 3.6 out of 5 stars from only 5 ratings on Amazon.ca as of this check — the same thin review history as its 17 cu ft sibling |

AcuRite 00515M Digital Wireless Fridge and Freezer Thermometer with Alarm
The only honest way to know a freezer is actually holding -18°C, or that it's drifting during an outage, before food is at risk — mounts outside the cabinet with a wired sensor inside.
Power Failure Alarm, Freezer Power Outage Alarm (7 Sirens)
A dedicated power-outage alarm — not a thermometer — so a freezer in a garage or basement you don't walk past daily tells you the moment it loses power, not hours later.
17.5-Inch Freezer Wire Basket Organizer Bins (2-Pack)
Every chest freezer in this table ships with at most one basket — a second and third basket is what actually keeps a deep chest from becoming a "dig to the bottom" freezer.

How we chose
This category runs Amazon-first: Amazon pays us a commission when you buy through these links, and we say so plainly above every table — see the disclosure and How We Make Money. We only publish a product after opening its actual Amazon.ca listing ourselves and reading the price, rating count, and stated specs off it on the date shown — never a guess, and never a number carried over from a different model's listing. Two of the nine products here (the Danby DCF070A5WDB and DCF100A5WDB) print an explicit garage-ready ambient range right on the Amazon.ca listing: 0°F to 110°F (-17°C to 43°C). The rest say "Garage Ready" on the box without a number, or don't claim it at all — we never upgrade a bare marketing label into a number we didn't actually read. The mechanism behind that label is real: GE Appliances' own support page explains that a refrigeration system needs the refrigerant to boil into a vapour to cool at all, and "if the outside temperature is not warm enough, the refrigerant will not boil to a vapor and no cooling will take place" — GE states it does not recommend installing a standard refrigerator or freezer below 60°F (about 15.5°C) ambient unless it's built and rated otherwise. A true garage-ready unit compensates for that; a unit that only says "Garage Ready" without a number is a smaller bet, and a plain indoor freezer in an unheated Ontario garage in January is a real risk of a freezer that looks like it's running while everything inside slowly thaws. None of the nine products here state a manufacturer outage-hold time, a running-watts figure for power-station sizing, or a power-fail indicator — we say so plainly in each row's specs rather than inventing one; if you need to size a power station or generator for a specific model, confirm its nameplate amperage directly with the manufacturer first, then see our backup power and portable generator comparisons. For sizing a beef order against these freezers, Christensen Ranch's own freezer-space guide gives the numbers we use throughout this page: a quarter cow needs 3–4 cu ft and yields 80–110 lbs of packaged beef, a half cow needs 6–9 cu ft and yields 160–220 lbs, and a whole cow needs 12–18 cu ft and yields 320–440 lbs, on a rule of thumb of about 25 lbs of packaged beef per cubic foot — and the same guide notes a chest freezer holds more meat than an upright of the same rated capacity, because nothing is lost to shelf gaps. For outage planning, Health Canada's own emergency food-safety guidance is specific and not ours to round differently: "A full freezer will keep food frozen for about 48 hours. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen for about 24 hours," and it adds not to open the door unless necessary and never to set frozen food outside, even in winter, since sun on a dark freezer bag can thaw food faster than the outdoor air temperature suggests. We are not appliance technicians or food-safety officials: if a specific model's garage-ready rating, outage hold time, or running-watt draw matters for your winter, confirm it directly with the manufacturer before buying, not from this table alone.

Frequently asked questions
How much freezer space do I actually need for a quarter, half, or whole beef?
Christensen Ranch's own freezer-space guide, written for exactly this question, gives a simple rule of thumb: plan on about 25 lbs of packaged beef per cubic foot of freezer space. Worked out, a quarter cow needs roughly 3–4 cu ft and yields 80–110 lbs of packaged beef; a half cow needs 6–9 cu ft and yields 160–220 lbs; and a whole cow needs 12–18 cu ft and yields 320–440 lbs. That puts a quarter or half beef comfortably inside the 5–10 cu ft group above, and a half-to-whole beef inside the 14–25 cu ft group — leave room for other food already in the freezer, since those ranges assume a mostly empty unit.
What does "garage ready" actually mean, and why does it matter in an unheated Ontario garage?
A standard refrigerator or freezer cools by boiling refrigerant into a vapour under pressure, and GE Appliances' own support documentation states plainly that "if the outside temperature is not warm enough, the refrigerant will not boil to a vapor and no cooling will take place" — GE says it does not recommend installing a standard unit where ambient temperatures drop below 60°F (about 15.5°C) unless the unit is built for it. A garage-ready model adds insulation and sometimes a small heater around the compressor specifically so it keeps cycling in a cold space; only two products in our table (the Danby DCF070A5WDB and DCF100A5WDB) print a numeric ambient range — 0°F to 110°F (-17°C to 43°C) — on their Amazon.ca listing. The rest say "Garage Ready" without a number, or don't claim it at all, and we never upgrade that label into a number we didn't actually read off the page.
How long will food stay frozen if the power goes out?
Health Canada's own emergency food-safety guidance states it directly: "A full freezer will keep food frozen for about 48 hours. A half-full freezer will keep food frozen for about 24 hours." None of the nine products in this table state a manufacturer-tested outage hold time of their own, so that general rule is what we rely on. Health Canada also says not to open the freezer door unless necessary during an outage, and never to set frozen food outside to keep it cold — even in winter, direct sun on a dark freezer bag can thaw food faster than the outdoor air alone would suggest.
Should I buy a power station or generator to keep a chest freezer running through an outage?
None of the nine freezers in this table state a running-watts figure on their Amazon.ca listing, so the right first step is reading the nameplate amperage sticker on the back or inside of the actual unit you buy, not guessing from its cubic footage. A small 7 cu ft chest freezer typically draws well under 300 running watts, while a 21–25 cu ft double-door unit can draw meaningfully more, especially at compressor start-up — once you have that number, our backup power comparison and portable generator comparison both carry verified Canadian prices sized for exactly this kind of load.
Chest or upright — which is better for a beef order?
Christensen Ranch's own guide, written for beef buyers specifically, says a chest freezer holds more meat than an upright of the same rated cubic footage, because nothing is lost to shelf gaps, and recommends chest freezers for a half or whole cow specifically for that reason. An upright — like the two Kenmore models in our 14–25 cu ft group — trades some of that packing efficiency for shelved, auto-defrost organization, which several buyers prefer for a smaller quarter-beef order or a household that doesn't want to dig to the bottom of a chest.
