Product comparisons
Water Softeners compared, with a verified Canadian price.
6 products verified · checked Oct 6, 2026
For Canadian homeowners staring at a scummy showerhead, a white crust on the kettle element, or a water bill that keeps climbing because the water heater is coated in scale. Most of Ontario sits on limestone-heavy groundwater, and a lot of municipal supplies aren't much softer — so this isn't a well-water-only problem. The six systems below are compared on grain capacity, type, flow rate, warranty, and a verified Canadian price, not on marketing claims.

| Product | Type | Capacity | Flow rate | Warranty | Price | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Fleck 5600SXT Water Softener (1.0 cu ft) Fleck | Salt-based, single tank | 30,000 grains (1.0 cu ft resin) | 7.5 GPM (max service flow) | 5 years, manufacturer defects (wear parts — piston, seals, brine valve — excluded) | $1,329.99as of Oct 6, 2026 Aquatell → | The workhorse single-tank softener Canadian water-treatment shops build their whole lineup around — a proven metered control valve, sold and shipped from Canada. More+ 10% cross-linked resin — tougher and longer-lived than the 8% resin most budget softeners use – 5-year warranty excludes the parts most likely to wear out first (piston, seals, brine valve) |
Aquatell Citymaster PRO (1.0 cu ft / 32K grain) Aquatell | Salt-based, single tank | 32,000 grains (1.0 cu ft resin) | 10 GPM (max service flow) | 5 years, top-to-bottom (covers wear parts the Fleck warranty excludes) | $1,479.99as of Oct 6, 2026 Aquatell → | Aquatell's own house brand, engineered and assembled in London, Ontario — a Clack control valve instead of Fleck's, and the strongest warranty of anything in this table. More+ Made in London, Ontario, with a 5-year top-to-bottom warranty — no wear-part carve-outs – Costs about $150 more than the equivalent Fleck 5600SXT size |
Fleck 9100SXT Twin Tank Water Softener (1.0 cu ft) Fleck | Salt-based, dual tank | 30,000 grains per tank, continuous supply (tanks alternate, no gap) | Varies by tank size — uninterrupted even while one tank regenerates | 5 years, manufacturer defects (wear parts excluded, same terms as the single-tank 5600SXT) | $2,299.99as of Oct 6, 2026 Aquatell → | Two tanks that hand off automatically — one softens while the other regenerates, so a big household never gets a few hours of hard water during regen. More+ Never without soft water, even mid-regeneration — the single-tank models all have a bypass window – Nearly double the price of the single-tank Fleck 5600SXT for the same per-tank capacity |
HUM Metered Water Softener (30,000 Grain) HUM (Waterite Technologies) | Salt-based, single tank | 30,000 grains | Up to 27 GPM (maximum) | Not stated on the product page — confirm directly with Water eStore before buying | $1,799.00as of Oct 6, 2026 Water eStore → | A Canadian-manufacturer (Waterite) metered softener sold direct by a Midland, Ontario water-treatment retailer, with a battery backup that holds settings through a power outage. More+ PowerCell battery backup keeps the control valve's settings through a power outage — the Fleck/Clack units here don't mention this – The product page doesn't state a warranty term, unlike every other row in this table |
A. O. Smith S500 High-Efficiency Water Softener (Wi-Fi) A. O. Smith | Salt-based, single tank, Wi-Fi connected | 49,800 grains | Not stated on the product page | 1 year complete unit / 3 years electronics / 6 years valve / 12 years tank and cabinet | $2,499.00as of Oct 6, 2026 Water eStore → | The only softener in this table with a phone app — check salt level and softener status from your phone instead of walking to the brine tank. More+ Wi-Fi app monitoring and the longest tank/valve warranty tiers in this table (6 and 12 years) – The complete-unit warranty is only 1 year — short next to everything else here — and flow rate isn't published |
HydroTAC Whole-Home System HydroTAC (Water eStore) | Salt-free conditioner (TAC) | Not applicable — TAC conditions water, it doesn't exchange hardness minerals out | Maximum 10 GPM (37.8 LPM) | Not stated on the product page — confirm directly with Water eStore before buying | $1,599.00as of Oct 6, 2026 Water eStore → | A salt-free conditioner, not a softener — Template-Assisted Crystallization changes how hardness minerals behave in the water instead of removing them, so there's no salt, no brine tank, and no regeneration cycle. More+ No salt, brine tank, drain line, or wastewater — simplest install and zero ongoing salt cost of anything in this table – Doesn't actually remove hardness the way a softener does — won't satisfy anyone whose problem is scale buildup in appliances that needs reversing, not just prevented |

Morton Clean and Protect II Water Softening Pellets (40 lb)
Every salt-based softener above needs a steady salt supply — pellets are the most common, lowest-maintenance form.
Pro Products ResCare RK41N All-Purpose Water Softener Cleaner (1 Gallon)
Salt alone doesn't clean the resin bed — a periodic resin cleaner removes iron and buildup that salt can't, extending the life of any softener above.
Varify Premium Water Hardness Test Kit (150 strips)
You can't size or verify any softener above without knowing your actual water hardness in grains per gallon first.

How we chose
We only publish a product once we've opened its actual Canadian retail page ourselves and read the price, specs, and warranty off it — see the "as of" date and source link on every row. Grain capacity is a starting point, not the whole answer: a rough rule is people in the household × 75 gallons/day × your water's hardness in grains per gallon, multiplied by the days between regenerations. A family of four on 10-grain water removes about 3,000 grains a day — 21,000 over a 7-day cycle — so a 24,000-to-32,000-grain unit regenerating weekly covers that with headroom. The same family on 20-grain water removes about 6,000 grains a day — 42,000 a week — which pushes you toward the 48,000–50,000+ grain options. We are not plumbers and this isn't an installation guide — get your actual water tested before buying, and if the problem is iron, sulphur smell, or bacteria rather than hardness, a softener alone won't fix it; see our well water guide and systems-compared page for those.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know what grain capacity I actually need?
Start from your water hardness (in grains per gallon — most municipalities publish this, or a home test kit reads it directly) and your household size. A common rule of thumb: multiply people in the house by about 75 gallons a day, then multiply that by your hardness in grains per gallon — that's roughly how many grains you remove per day. Multiply the daily figure by 7 for a typical weekly regeneration cycle. A family of four on moderately hard 10-grain water removes about 3,000 grains a day, or 21,000 a week, which lands in the 24,000–32,000-grain range — the capacity of several products in our table above. Harder water or a bigger household pushes you toward the 48,000–50,000+ grain options.
What's the difference between a salt-based softener and a salt-free conditioner like HydroTAC?
A salt-based softener (five of the six products above) physically exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium using resin and salt brine — it removes hardness and needs regular salt refills and a drain connection for regeneration. A salt-free conditioner like HydroTAC uses Template-Assisted Crystallization to change how those minerals behave in the water so they don't stick to pipes and appliances as scale, without actually removing them or using any salt. If your goal is softer-feeling skin and hair or truly soft water for cleaning, you want a real softener. If you just want to stop scale buildup without salt or wastewater, a conditioner is the simpler, lower-maintenance choice.
Will a water softener fix orange staining or rotten-egg smell in my water?
No — those are iron and sulphur problems, not hardness problems, and a softener's resin isn't designed to handle them in any quantity (most of the softeners above cap out around 1–5 mg/L of clear-water iron at most). If you're dealing with orange stains, rust-coloured water, or a sulphur smell, you need an oxidizing iron/sulphur filter instead, or in addition. Our systems-compared page covers those specifically.
Do I need a plumber to install a water softener?
Every product in our table ships with a DIY install kit (bypass valve, plumbing connectors) aimed at a confident DIYer with basic plumbing tools, and several retailers sell them specifically as self-install units. That said, we're not plumbers and this isn't installation advice — if your home's plumbing is unusual, you're not comfortable cutting into a water line, or local code requires a licensed installer for a drain connection, hire one. A bad install voids the warranty faster than almost anything else.
Single tank or twin tank — which do I need?
A single-tank softener (most of the products above) goes into regeneration for roughly 1–2 hours, usually scheduled overnight, during which water either bypasses softening entirely or runs at reduced pressure — most households never notice. A twin-tank system like the Fleck 9100SXT alternates between two tanks so one is always softening, which matters for large households, farms, or anyone running water around the clock. For a typical 1–4 person home, the extra cost of a twin-tank system usually isn't worth it.
