Water Leak Detectors & Sump Pump Alarms compared, with a verified Canadian price.
12 products verified · checked Oct 6, 2026
The pump that fails silently is the one that gets you — a sump pump's motor or switch gives out most often during exactly the spring thaw or ice storm that's putting the most water into the pit, in a basement nobody's checking because the power or the WiFi is also out. For a Woodstock, Stratford, or St. Thomas basement on the Thames River's heavy clay, a cheap battery alarm that just beeps loud enough to wake you up is the cheapest insurance in the house. The twelve products below split into three groups: five high-water alarms and monitors for the sump pit itself (from a $21 battery beeper to a WiFi-connected unit with text alerts), four Wi-Fi leak sensors for everywhere else water can get in unnoticed — under a water heater, behind a washer, below a sink — and three automatic shutoff valves that don't just warn you, they turn the water off. Every row below was checked on its own amazon.ca listing the same day, with a verified Canadian price, not a manufacturer's marketing claim.

Moen 900-001 Flo by Moen 3/4-Inch Smart Water Shutoff Moen | 3/4 in to 1-1/4 in | On the main water line — the listing itself says to consult a professional | Standard AC/DC power connection; WiFi required for full functionality | Not stated on the listing | Installed on the main water line, Flo's MicroLeak technology tests the whole system daily and can shut the water off itself the moment it finds a problem — the most established name in this group, at the highest price. More+ MicroLeak technology catches a leak as small as a drop per minute, and several reviewers report an insurance discount after installing it – Nearly $800 before a plumber, and multiple long-term reviewers report the turbine flow sensor eventually clogs or fails and needs replacing
YoLink Water Shutoff Kit: Controller + EVO + 3-Pack Sensors + Hub YoLink | Fits an existing quarter-turn ball valve — no pipe cutting | DIY — clamps onto the existing shutoff valve | Valve controller: battery (2-year life) or AC with battery backup; hub: AC | Not stated on the listing | The EVO valve operator clamps onto an existing quarter-turn ball valve — no pipe cutting, no plumber — and the valve still closes during a power or internet outage because the sensors talk to it directly. More+ No pipe cutting and no plumber — the EVO valve operator clamps onto an existing ball valve, and offline device-to-device control still closes it during a power or internet outage – Only works with a quarter-turn ball valve already on your main line — an older gate valve needs a plumber to swap first
Frizzlife LP365 Smart Water Monitor and Automatic Shutoff Frizzlife | 3/4 in and 1 in | On the main water line — the listing recommends professional installation | Lithium-ion battery; an AC adapter is recommended for always-on monitoring | Not stated on the listing | An ultrasonic flow sensor and shutoff valve with no moving parts to clog — Canadian reviewers describe it as a cheaper, hard-water-friendlier alternative to Moen's turbine-based Flo. More+ Ultrasonic flow sensor has no moving parts to clog, unlike Moen's turbine meter, and detects leaks as small as 0.01 GPM per the listing – One verified Canadian reviewer reported the unit itself leaked at a fitting after a week of use — read the thread-sealing instructions carefully during install |

Geevon 2-Pack Water Leak Detectors (100 dB)
The cheapest possible backstop under a water heater or washer — no app, no hub, just a loud local beep the moment the three metal prongs touch water.
HQRP Pedestal Sump Pump Float Switch
A universal replacement float switch for a pedestal pump that's started sticking on or staying off — far cheaper than replacing the whole pump.
Feekoon 6 ft Leak Sensor Extension Cable (for Moen Flo detectors)
Moen's own Smart Leak Detector cable is short — this adds 6 ft (stack up to three for 18 ft) to reach a sensor placement further from the detector body.

How we chose
We only publish a product once we've opened its own amazon.ca listing ourselves and read the price, specs, and rating off it — see the "as of" date and ASIN link on every row. A local siren, an app notification, and a cellular alert are three different layers of protection, not interchangeable: a $21 battery alarm like PumpSpy's only works if you're home and within earshot; a WiFi sensor like GoveeLife's or YoLink's texts you anywhere, but does nothing if your home WiFi is down — which, during an ice storm, is often exactly when the power (and therefore the router) also goes out. If that's a real risk for your home, see our backup power comparison for a battery or generator that can keep a router running through an outage, and pair it with a WiFi sensor rather than relying on a local-only alarm alone. For a cottage, a rural property, or anywhere the heat might be set back or lost entirely over a winter weekend, a freeze alert matters as much as a leak alert — Moen's Smart Leak Detector and its Flo shutoff valve are the two products in this table that explicitly monitor temperature, not just moisture. Sensor placement matters more than the sensor itself: put one at the water heater's base, one behind the washer's hose connections, one under every sink with a P-trap, one in the sump pit itself, and one near the furnace's condensate line if it has one — a sensor sitting in a drawer protects nothing. On insurance: several reviewers across multiple products in this table mention a discount from their home insurer after installing a monitored shutoff system, but we could not independently verify a specific Canadian insurer's program on 2026-10-06, so we're naming the pattern, not a specific offer — ask your own broker. On automatic shutoff valves specifically: every one of the three in this table either recommends a plumber (Moen Flo, Frizzlife LP365) or needs an existing quarter-turn ball valve already on your main line (YoLink's EVO operator) — we are not plumbers, and a valve installed wrong is worse than no valve at all.
A WiFi leak sensor is useless the moment the power (and the router) goes out — which is often exactly when a pipe is most likely to freeze or a sump pump is working hardest. Compare backup power for a router, sump pump, and the rest of the house →

Frequently asked questions
Local alarm, Wi-Fi sensor, or automatic shutoff valve — which do I actually need?
They're three layers, not three competing choices. A local-only alarm (Basement Watchdog, PumpSpy, the basic Sump Alarm) only helps if you're home and close enough to hear it — cheap, reliable, but useless while you're at work or away. A Wi-Fi sensor (GoveeLife, YoLink, Moen's 920-005, Aqara) texts or emails you anywhere there's a cell signal, but does nothing if your home's power or internet is down, which is common during exactly the storm that's causing the leak in the first place. An automatic shutoff valve (Moen Flo, YoLink's shutoff kit, Frizzlife LP365) is the only category that acts on its own — it turns the water off whether or not anyone sees the alert. Most households in this table's price range start with a few cheap local alarms at the highest-risk spots, add Wi-Fi sensors as budget allows, and only add a shutoff valve once they've had a leak or are told to by an insurer.
Why do some of these need a hub, and others don't?
It comes down to the wireless protocol. GoveeLife's and YoLink's sensors use a sub-1GHz or LoRa radio that isn't compatible with your home Wi-Fi directly — they need the included hub to translate that signal onto your network, but the tradeoff is real range: YoLink's hub reaches up to 1,300 feet, far past what Wi-Fi reliably covers through a basement's concrete and framing. Aqara's sensors use Zigbee and need an Aqara Hub sold separately — if you already own one for other Aqara devices, the sensors alone are cheaper; if not, budget for the hub too. Moen's 920-005 detector and the Basement Watchdog/PumpSpy-style alarms skip a hub entirely: Moen connects straight to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and the battery alarms don't connect to anything at all.
Do I need a plumber to install an automatic shutoff valve?
For two of the three in this table, yes: both Moen's Flo (900-001) and Frizzlife's LP365 install on the home's main water line, and both listings themselves recommend professional installation — getting the orientation, sealing, and power connection wrong on your main line risks a worse leak than the one you're trying to prevent. YoLink's shutoff kit is the DIY exception: its EVO valve operator clamps onto an existing quarter-turn ball valve without cutting any pipe, which several Canadian reviewers in this table completed themselves in under an hour. If your main line only has an older gate valve (not a quarter-turn lever), you'd need a plumber to swap it for a ball valve first before the YoLink kit would even fit.
What does a freeze alert actually protect against, and which of these have one?
A frozen pipe that bursts as it thaws is one of the most expensive forms of water damage, and it's a particular risk for a cottage, a rural property, or any home where the heat gets set back or lost over a weekend away. Of the twelve products in this table, Moen's 920-005 Smart Leak Detector and its Flo Smart Water Shutoff (900-001) are the two that explicitly state temperature monitoring alongside leak detection — Moen's listing specifically calls out alerting on "extreme abnormalities in temperature, which could indicate a risk for freezing pipes." The rest of this table's products are moisture-only: they tell you water is already present, not that a pipe is at risk of freezing before it bursts.
Does installing one of these actually get me a discount on home insurance?
Several reviewers across different products in this table mention getting a discount after installing a monitored leak-detection or shutoff system — one Moen 900-001 reviewer and one GoveeLife reviewer both said so independently — but insurance discount programs vary by insurer, by province, and change over time, and we could not independently verify a specific Canadian insurer's current program as part of this comparison. If a discount matters to your decision, call your own broker or insurer before buying and ask exactly which products and certifications they recognize, rather than assuming any product on this page qualifies.
